Give the history before dispatch
Tell the team who last worked on the unit and what was attempted. A bench read, case opening, board repair and software write are different events. Include dates, the original complaint, the result of each intervention and whether the unit still communicated afterwards.
A previous attempt does not automatically rule out further work. It changes the starting information needed for a useful assessment. Avoid describing a unit as untouched if it has been opened or repaired; an accurate history helps the technician separate the initial fault from later changes.
Preserve the condition you have
Do not remove sealant, scrape corrosion, rework solder joints or open the housing further to improve an enquiry photograph. Provide clear external images and any existing photographs from the previous repair. If parts or components were removed, list what is missing and retain them separately for discussion.
Packing instructions should account for a damaged case, loose pieces or exposed electronics. Ask which parts are required before posting. The team needs to know if the original cover, connector or fixing is absent, rather than discovering an incomplete unit after a shipment has arrived.
Keep the file history alongside the physical history
Previous programming may have altered what is currently stored in the controller. Retain each file with the tool, operation, date and unit identity that produced it. A file labelled “original” may refer to a previous repair stage rather than the vehicle’s initial state.
Say whether anyone wrote donor data, restored a backup or attempted a different software version. Physical repair and software recovery can interact, but neither should proceed on a guessed file. The exact accessible data and supported route are checked for the current unit.
Agree assessment and replacement contingencies
The quote can distinguish assessment from any proposed repair, recovery or compatible donor transfer. Ask how additional damage, missing components or inaccessible data could change the scope. Repairability and the condition of a customer-supplied donor remain separate questions.
Send Northern Calibration the registration, postcode, label, earlier invoices or reports and a concise intervention timeline. Precision Remaps UK will discuss the next practical route. Keep the original and replacement clearly identified, and wait for parts acceptance before arranging a postal job.
Send the information that helps.
- Original complaint and every later intervention
- Complete label and existing condition photographs
- Missing components, covers or connectors
- Files with tool, operation, date and source
- Registration, postcode and previous reports
Questions about this enquiry
Will previous repair automatically prevent further assessment?
No. Explain the work and current condition first so the feasibility and scope can be checked.
Should I open the ECU to take better pictures?
No. Send external photos and any images already taken during earlier work. Further opening should be agreed as part of the assessment.
