What the symptom can mean
No communication describes the result of a test, rather than the cause. The ECU may have lost a supply, ground, network connection or the conditions needed to wake up. An internal failure is another possibility. Record whether other modules can still be scanned and whether the engine cranks, starts or runs intermittently.
Tell us whether the fault existed before any repairs or appeared after a battery event, water ingress, removal or programming. That sequence helps separate a vehicle-side problem from a controller or software job. A dashboard message alone does not establish which route is needed.
What your garage can establish
Ask the technician for the complete vehicle scan and the findings from the relevant supply, ground and network checks. The tests must follow the vehicle wiring information and account for operating conditions. A fuse that appears intact or a voltage measured with no load may not settle the diagnosis.
If communication returns intermittently, record the conditions and preserve the scan from both states. Do not open the ECU or try repeated writes simply to see whether it responds. Send photographs of the label and connectors, together with the tests already completed.
Repair, recovery or a compatible donor
An accepted removed-unit assessment can investigate the controller and available data. Repair feasibility depends on the actual damage. If repair is unsuitable, a supported data-transfer route may be assessed against a compatible replacement.
An original that does not communicate normally may still contain recoverable information, but that cannot be promised remotely. Keep the original ECU and all available backups. We check donor suitability before asking you to buy or send a replacement.
Arrange the right next step
If vehicle-side checks remain outstanding, a workshop investigation or suitable mobile appointment may be more useful than posting a controller. For an already diagnosed module job, send the registration, full postcode, labels and report for postal acceptance.
Your quote should distinguish assessment, repair or recovery, donor work and any refitting requirements. Northern Calibration enquiries go directly to Precision Remaps UK; the proposed route and availability are confirmed before work begins.
The useful details.
- Full vehicle scan, including which modules respond
- Supply, ground and network test findings
- ECU label and connector photographs
- Whether the engine cranks and when the problem began
- Registration, postcode and previous programming history
