Identify who reported the communication fault

A lost-communication message is recorded by a module that did not receive information it expected. The report needs to show which module recorded it, which module is mentioned and whether that unit can currently be reached.

Save the complete scan rather than copying only one code description. Current and historical faults, time of occurrence and other responding modules can change the interpretation. A code naming the engine ECU is not a complete diagnosis of internal ECU failure.

Review the conditions and recent events

Tell us about battery discharge, disconnection, water ingress, collision repair, controller replacement or programming. Include whether the engine starts and whether the fault appears only at certain times.

Several communication complaints after an electrical event can require a different investigation from one controller remaining offline with verified supplies. The history should guide the tests instead of starting with an assumed replacement.

Electrical findings make a module assessment useful

A qualified technician can follow the vehicle information to check the relevant supplies, grounds, connectors and network. The checks and operating conditions should be documented so the controller is assessed in context.

Network measurements and isolation procedures are vehicle-specific. This guide is a handover checklist, not a universal wiring procedure. Do not bridge pins or apply a guessed supply to a controller based on a generic diagram.

Agree the next step from the findings

Where the vehicle-side checks remain incomplete, diagnosis is normally the useful enquiry. If evidence points towards an internal ECU or TCU fault, the appropriate label and report can support a removed-unit assessment.

If the fault started after a replacement or write, include original and donor identities or the software logs. These situations may involve compatibility or recovery rather than hardware repair. Share registration and postcode so the arrangement can be quoted as part of the job.
