Describe the failure state, not only the normal state
Tell the technician whether the engine cranks normally, turns slowly or does not crank at all during the fault. Record whether it restarts after cooling, after cycling the ignition or after another action. Include any dashboard message.
A vehicle that behaves normally when examined can still have useful evidence from the failure. Record approximate temperature, time since driving and whether the problem follows rain, standing or a particular journey. Avoid clearing the scan before these details are saved.
Capture communication and live-data findings
Ask the garage what modules respond when the fault is present and whether the relevant engine and security data can be recorded. Tests selected for the application may help distinguish starting permission, electrical supply, sensor information and mechanical operation.
Send the complete diagnostic report from the fault state where possible. A code that is absent during a successful start does not erase earlier evidence. Do not buy an ECU simply because the fault is intermittent or temperature-related.
Review work already carried out
List replacement parts, connector repairs, battery events and programming. Explain which change affected the symptom and which made no difference. Include modifications and existing engine or gearbox software.
This history helps avoid repeating parts replacement without a clear test result. Suspected internal ECU failure is one possible outcome of diagnosis, but other vehicle systems must be considered before a removed-unit repair is accepted.
Choose investigation or controller assessment
If the fault has not been established, discuss a vehicle-side diagnostic route. A removed controller alone may not reproduce a fault involving the loom, supply or another system.
Where the garage has identified a suspected controller fault, send its label and findings for repair or data-recovery assessment. Include registration, postcode and whether the vehicle is already at a workshop so arrangements fit the situation.
Send the information that helps.
- Crank / no-crank behaviour during the fault
- Temperature, weather and restart conditions
- Complete scan from the failure state
- Tests and parts already tried
- Registration, postcode and installer findings
