The method follows the requested operation

Autotuner describes multiple methods around OBD, bench, boot, datalogs, DTCs and post-unlock routes. Those labels are useful, but they do not remove the need to identify the ECU or TCU and the work required.

A Stage 1 calibration, a full backup, a failed-write recovery and a donor transfer can all require different access and evidence. The first question is not only whether the tool connects; it is what data or write operation is needed.

OBD is convenient when the vehicle route is supported

OBD work can be efficient for eligible vehicles, especially when the controller and battery support are suitable. But OBD access does not prove that every memory area can be read or that a recovery route exists after a failure.

For a mobile tuning enquiry, send the registration, postcode, current faults, modifications and gearbox details. If the controller is protected or requires extra access, the appointment scope changes.

Bench and boot need preparation, not guesswork

Removed-controller work needs the exact label, correct handling, suitable packaging and an agreed reason for removal. Boot work can involve direct access to the electronics and should not be attempted from a generic family name.

If another garage is removing the unit, include a direct technician contact. That helps confirm whether the job needs the vehicle, the module, both original and donor units or further diagnostic information first.

Keep recovery evidence separate from tuning files

If programming failed, keep the files and logs in their original structure. Identify which file was read from the vehicle and which file was written. Do not rename a later read as original or mix donor files with the vehicle backup.

Northern Calibration enquiries go to Precision Remaps UK for a practical method, price and availability. Ask for the accepted access route before booking a mobile visit or dispatching an ECU.
