The file name does not establish its contents
A technician needs to know how a backup was obtained, which controller it belongs to and what the operation captured. Files described as “stock”, “original” or “full” can have different meanings depending on the tool and protocol.
A calibration file should not automatically be treated as a replacement-data backup. Vehicle-specific configuration or security information may be outside its scope. State the tool, selected operation, date and diagnostic identification when sending a file for assessment.
Keep originals separate from later attempts
Preserve the first valid read, supplied calibration, attempted write and any later recovery reads as separate records. Avoid replacing a previous file with a new one using the same name. A read obtained after a failed write is not automatically the pre-failure original.
Keep the tool logs, screenshots of error messages and controller identification alongside the files. A short timeline explaining what was read and written is often more useful than a folder of files with unexplained names.
A backup supports assessment; it does not guarantee recovery
Recovery depends on the controller’s current accessibility, condition and the suitability of the available information. Some operations require data that a previous tuning read did not capture.
A donor or replacement job also needs compatibility checks. Do not assume that writing the largest file will reproduce everything required by the vehicle. Send the originals and evidence so the technician can determine the supported route.
Share only what belongs to the agreed job
Tell us which files are from your vehicle and which were supplied by another technician. Include the registration, labels, fault history and intended result. Do not send passwords or unrelated account credentials.
Retain your copies until the repair and vehicle checks are complete. The enquiry form prepares your message; files and label photographs are attached in your email or WhatsApp conversation when the team requests them.
Send the information that helps.
