Missing and unreadable are not the same

A unit that no longer responds to a diagnostic scan may still physically contain information needed by a supported assessment. A unit that has been discarded cannot be examined. Those situations should not be described as the same routine cloning enquiry.

If you still have the original, retain it and photograph the label and condition. Tell us whether it has been opened, programmed, repaired or affected by water or an electrical event. Do not assume silence proves all its data is lost.

Explain the information you actually have

Send any original reads, identification screens, tool logs and diagnostic reports, describing their source and operation. A virtual-read or calibration file can be useful for some software work without being the original memory set required for replacement.

A VIN or registration alone does not reproduce all controller-specific information. Give vehicle specification, replacement labels and the exact intended result. Do not send account passwords or assume that a file from another vehicle is an acceptable original.

A normal clone needs a supported original-data route

A direct transfer depends on obtaining the necessary original information and writing it to a suitable replacement through an available procedure. Damage, security and memory support affect that route.

Where required data cannot be recovered, another application-specific replacement or adaptation approach may need considering. It should be discussed and quoted separately. No alternative should be promised from the broad ECU family or a matching connector.

Check the donor before further spending

If only the donor remains, send its label and the history of how it was chosen. State the original’s part numbers where genuinely recorded, rather than guessing them from an online listing.

Buying more replacements does not resolve missing original information. Compatibility and the proposed operation should be assessed before payment or dispatch. A candidate’s physical condition remains another important part of the repair.

Plan the next assessment honestly

Include the full scan and whether the vehicle cranks, starts briefly or does not communicate. Vehicle-side diagnosis or configuration may still be required. A removed donor alone may not answer those questions.

Northern Calibration routes the enquiry to Precision Remaps UK for an application-specific plan. The team confirms feasible next work, required parts and the quote. The first message can simply state what is available; you do not need to invent the programming method.

Questions about this enquiry

Can you guarantee a clone with only a donor ECU?

No. A normal original-to-donor route cannot be assumed when the original information is unavailable.

Should I keep an ECU described as completely dead?

Yes, until the replacement job is assessed and completed. Its available information cannot be decided from diagnostic silence alone.
