In This Guide

Describe the towing pattern

Include vehicle specification, usual trailer or caravan, frequency and normal load. Explain the routes and whether the priority is response, repeated shifts or another concern. Regular sustained load is a different brief from occasional unloaded performance.

A new struggle on a familiar route should be investigated. Tell us when the behaviour changed and include scans or recent repairs. A towing map is not the automatic answer to a loss of engine performance.

Keep the vehicle’s documented limits

Changing calibration does not change the approved towing or vehicle weight limits. Use the vehicle’s documented ratings and the appropriate towing guidance. Do not interpret a higher torque figure as permission to tow a heavier combination.

The enquiry should still describe the actual combination. It helps scope the driving goal and practical workload without pretending software changes the vehicle’s approval.

Bring cooling and drivetrain history

Share servicing, temperature concerns, boost or emissions warnings and current software. The engine’s condition matters when a vehicle will work under load. Existing issues should be diagnosed before requesting more output.

Include clutch or automatic transmission symptoms and maintenance. Supported engine and gearbox work can be considered together, but a torque-limit change does not repair wear or establish the capacity of the hardware.

Agree a realistic response brief

Describe the useful result you want and ask what is suitable for the exact setup. Access and checks determine the appointment route. Send full postcode and acceptable availability rather than assuming a standard mobile job fits every application.

After accepted work, follow the agreed fuel and handover guidance and continue using the documented towing limits. Record any unexpected warning or behaviour with the conditions and contact the team.

Technical reference: GOV.UK: towing weight and width limits. Reviewed 7 October 2026. Work and any remaining installation requirements are assessed for the exact application.

Questions about this enquiry

Does a remap change the approved towing capacity?

No. The vehicle’s documented towing and weight limits remain the reference.

Should the brief focus only on peak torque?

No. Load, sustained use, cooling, drivetrain condition and the delivery of response belong in the assessment.
