Describe how the file was obtained
A virtual-read operation generally obtains an applicable file using controller identification rather than reading every memory area from the particular unit. A real-read operation reads the content supported by the selected protocol.
Neither phrase is enough to establish a full cloning backup. The technician needs the tool, operation, controller identity and memories captured. A real calibration read can still have a narrower scope than the data needed for replacement.
A standard file and vehicle-specific data differ
Software or calibration for an identified application is not automatically the vehicle’s security, configuration or other original memory content. That distinction matters when a replacement controller needs to retain the original identity.
Do not rename a supplied file “full original” and assume that makes it suitable for every operation. Preserve its source and identification. For recovery, an applicable software file may help with one stage while other information or checks remain necessary.
Record modifications and later operations
If the vehicle already had a remap, explain whether the read came from the unit or from a virtual-read service. Include hardware modifications and any later manufacturer or third-party software changes.
Keep the first valid read, supplied file, attempted write and later reads separate. A file acquired after an interrupted session should not replace the earlier original in your records. Logs and a timeline are useful alongside the binary files.
Ask what the operation requires
Tuning, original-software restoration, interrupted-write recovery and cloning have different data requirements. Support must be checked for the operation you actually need, not just for reading maps on the family.
If original data is absent or the unit is damaged, state that early. Recoverability and donor compatibility are separate checks. Writing a file from another vehicle without confirming its scope can complicate the assessment.
Prepare a recovery or replacement enquiry
Send the label, registration, postcode, tool, operation and file history. Include the exact error sequence if a write failed. Attach the required files through the agreed email or support conversation rather than sending passwords or unrelated documents.
The quote should state the intended software outcome and the supported checks. Do not treat a successful write as proof that all vehicle data, configuration and operating faults have been resolved. Vehicle-side verification may still be needed.

Questions about this enquiry
Does a real read always mean a full clone backup?
No. The captured memory areas and required replacement data must be checked.
Is a virtual-read file useless for recovery?
Not necessarily. Its applicability and the recovery stage matter, but it should not be presented as all original vehicle-specific data.
