Separate the original fault from the replacement fault

Write down how the vehicle behaved with the original ECU and what changed when the replacement was fitted. A donor that communicates but will not permit starting can present a different problem from an original controller that was completely offline.

Send the full scan rather than only an immobiliser message. The engine controller, vehicle security system and other modules may report useful information. Keep the original unit even if a seller described it as beyond repair.

A matching case is not enough

Original and replacement labels need checking together. Manufacturer numbers, hardware versions, software identity and the intended engine and transmission application matter. A listing that says “fits this model” is not an assessment of the data-transfer route.

Before buying another donor, send both labels and any diagnostic identification screens. We can discuss whether the existing replacement is a candidate for the requested work. Compatibility remains specific to the units and operation.

Cloning, programming and adaptation are different jobs

A supported clone transfers the required original information into a suitable replacement. Programming writes applicable software. Coding configures the unit for its application, while adaptation can establish relationships or operating settings where the vehicle requires it.

A tuning file or calibration-only read should not be assumed to contain the security and configuration data needed for replacement. If the original is missing or unreadable, tell us at enquiry stage so an alternative assessment can be considered.

Plan the return to the vehicle

For an accepted postal transfer, the agreed scope explains which units are required and whether further vehicle-side work remains. The installer must also resolve the original electrical, water-ingress or mechanical issue.

Send your registration, postcode and who will refit the unit. A supported data transfer is one part of a repair; final starting, fault-memory and operating checks still take place on the vehicle.
