Separate vehicle identity from calibration history
A replacement enquiry needs to establish the supported data required for the vehicle and the software the customer intends to retain. These are related questions, but “clone my ECU” does not describe the existing tune, installed hardware or whether the present calibration is suitable.
State who tuned the car, when it was done and whether another update or repair followed. If you bought the vehicle already modified, identify what is known and what remains uncertain. A stage label or claimed power figure is less useful than the actual controller identification and file history.
Describe the available reads precisely
An accessible calibration file, virtual read and supported full backup can contain different information. AutoTuner’s file-format documentation distinguishes tuning files from backup data. Tell the team which tool and read operation produced each file rather than assuming every saved file is a complete replacement backup.
Keep files unchanged and identify which unit they came from. The technician checks whether the original data, donor and supported operation are sufficient for the proposed transfer. A usable calibration file alone does not establish that all the information needed for a replacement job is available.
Check the tune against the hardware that remains
Provide the fuel grade, exact turbo and supporting parts, transmission and current symptoms. If the controller failed while the car also had a boost, fuelling or drivetrain issue, that vehicle-side fault still needs investigation. Data transfer cannot make unsuitable hardware or a mechanical fault disappear.
Ask whether the accepted job retains supported current data, restores verified original software or requires a separate calibration review. Those outcomes should be clear in the quotation. Copying unknown modified software without discussing it can leave the next installer without a reliable starting point.
Plan a complete vehicle handover
The installer needs the agreed controller identity, software outcome and any remaining coding or adaptation requirements. Keep the old ECU and records until refitting and vehicle checks are complete. Do not treat a successful bench transfer as a measured performance result for the finished car.
Send both labels, registration, postcode, available files and modification list through Northern Calibration. Precision Remaps UK can scope supported replacement-data work and any separate tuning assessment together. Confirm the required units and the planned software outcome before dispatch or booking.

Questions about this enquiry
Will cloning automatically preserve my Stage 1 tune?
The transferred data and software outcome depend on the supported operation and available original. State the tune and agree the intended result before work starts.
Can a virtual read replace the original ECU for cloning?
Do not assume so. Its contents and the replacement-data requirements must be checked for the actual controller.
