An older ECU still needs an exact match

Start with readable photographs of the complete Bosch and vehicle-manufacturer labels. Add the registration, engine, gearbox and all diagnostic identification available. EDC16 and MED9 describe broad controller families; the suffix, hardware and installed software help define the actual job.

A used unit offered for the same model is only a potential donor. Share its complete identity before buying it. Tell us whether the original still communicates, whether the vehicle starts and what testing led to the replacement decision. This helps distinguish a controller-data enquiry from a vehicle fault that needs further diagnosis.

Describe what the earlier read actually contains

Keep the original files, tool name, selected operation and read logs together. A file saved for engine calibration may have a different scope from the information needed to preserve a vehicle’s identity in a replacement controller. File size or the word “original” alone does not establish a complete backup.

AutoTuner’s published development history includes EDC16 and MED9 bench access. That is a tooling reference, rather than confirmation for every variant or operation. We check the particular unit and the memories required before agreeing a transfer or recovery route.

Repair, replacement and recovery answer different problems

For suspected internal failure, send the supply, ground, wiring and communication findings. Include photographs of corrosion or previous case opening. Correcting an external short or water leak remains part of the vehicle repair even if the ECU also needs work.

For a failed software write, preserve the sequence of events, attempted files and tool messages. For replacement, keep both units available. The original’s accessible data and the donor’s suitability are separate questions; a favourable answer to one does not settle the other.

Agree the handover before the units travel

Tell us who will remove and refit the ECU and whether the car is at a garage. Accepted postal work is quoted around the actual parts, original condition and agreed checks. Include the return postcode and any installation deadline when requesting availability.

The job brief states the accepted electronic work and any coding, adaptation or on-vehicle diagnosis remaining. A verified write or bench communication check does not prove every connected system in the complete vehicle. Ask your installer to retain the before-and-after scan.
