Begin with the purpose of the file

An older ECU may come with a file saved during an earlier remap. Keep it, but ask what operation produced it and what the file was intended to contain. “Original read” can be a description used by a supplier without explaining the complete scope of the backup.

For a replacement enquiry, the important question is whether the original information required by the supported transfer route is available. For calibration, a different file scope may be sufficient. Do not rename or combine files in an attempt to make a replacement package: preserve the source records for the technician.

Make the evidence easy to follow

Create a simple list of the files supplied, the unit each came from, the tool and operation, and the approximate date. Add logs or identification screenshots where available. If another garage holds the backup, ask it to confirm the original vehicle and controller instead of forwarding an unidentified attachment.

Label photographs are equally useful. Put original and donor identities alongside the file list and tell us which ECU currently sits in the car. Include any earlier programming, repair or case opening. A short chronological note is easier to assess than a collection of screenshots with no explanation.

Keep access, data and donor suitability separate

AutoTuner’s development history refers to EDC16 and MED9 bench programming. That does not mean every family variant has the same available read, replacement method or condition. The current tool operation must be checked for the actual controller.

A donor can be unsuitable even when the original data is available. The original can also have damaged or inaccessible data even when a suitable donor exists. Ask for both questions to be addressed in the quote, including what assessment happens if the proposed direct transfer cannot be completed.

Agree the next step with the installer

Include the vehicle-side diagnosis that led to ECU replacement. An unresolved supply, loom or water-ingress fault can affect the returned unit too. If the car remains with a garage, share the installer’s findings and ask who will complete coding, adaptation and the final scan.

Send this brief before dispatch: vehicle and postcode, both labels, original condition, file inventory and installer details. Precision Remaps UK can then confirm the supported assessment or transfer scope, required parts and availability. Preserve the original ECU until the route has been agreed.

Questions about this enquiry

Is the largest file automatically the full backup?

No. The operation, format and controller determine what the file contains. Ask the original programmer for the read details.

Should I send the original even if I have a read file?

Keep it available and confirm the required parts with the team. The file alone may not answer every question about the replacement route.
