Start with the complete controller identity
EDC17 or MED17 is a family description, not the full specification for a replacement job. Send the entire label, manufacturer part numbers and any diagnostic hardware and software identification. Include the registration, engine and transmission.
For a donor enquiry, photograph both labels before buying or dispatching. The required comparison depends on the particular unit and the proposed operation. A similar housing or the same broad family should not be used as the only compatibility check.
Specify cloning, repair, recovery or tuning
A clone aims to preserve the original information required for a compatible replacement. A calibration changes supported operating data. Recovery deals with the controller’s current software or communication state. These are different scopes even when performed on the same family.
The memories and security information required for the replacement route need assessing. If your backup came from a tuning read, state the tool and operation. Do not assume that every file described as a read contains all the original data needed for a clone.
Describe the original unit’s condition
Communication loss, an interrupted write and water damage call for different evidence. Include electrical findings for a suspected hardware fault, or original files and logs for a programming failure.
If the original is unreadable, keep it for assessment. Normal diagnostic silence does not establish what data is recoverable, and recovery cannot be promised before the actual unit is checked. Tell us if the case was opened or previous repair was attempted.
Plan access and handover
The supported OBD, bench or boot route is confirmed for the exact controller and operation. We do not apply one method or turnaround to the entire family.
Accepted postal work is useful when the ECU is already removed at a garage. The quote should state the parts required, agreed checks and any coding or adaptation that remains on the vehicle. Share your installer’s contact and full postcode when enquiring.
