Bench support is useful, but it is not a blanket promise

Magicmotorsport documents Flex bench support for selected VAG Bosch DQ500 Gen2, Bosch DQ38x Gen2 and ZF AL552 Gen2 controllers, including internal EEPROM and full-backup operations. It also notes that cloning support depends on matching Bosch part numbers.

That makes the exact controller identity more important, not less. A gearbox family name such as DQ381, DQ500 or AL552 is only the start of the enquiry; the original and donor electronic labels still need comparing before the work is accepted.

Treat mechatronic work as both electronic and mechanical

A supported TCU data transfer can help a compatible replacement communicate with the vehicle correctly, but it does not repair worn clutches, pressure loss, contaminated oil or a mechanically unsuitable gearbox.

Ask the installer for the full gearbox fault report and the reason the mechatronic is being changed. If the complaint is judder, slipping, pressure regulation or failed basic settings, include those findings with the cloning enquiry.

Plan the handover after the data work

After refitting, the vehicle may still need coding, basic settings, adaptation, fluid-level checks and a complete scan. Those steps belong to the identified transmission, not a generic DSG or ZF procedure copied from another model.

A good quote separates the accepted electronic work from the refitting responsibilities. For postal jobs, the workshop needs to know what has been transferred, which unit is original, which is donor and what checks remain.

Send the right evidence before buying or posting parts

Before buying a donor, send the registration, gearbox identity, original and replacement labels, fault codes and the installer details. If the replacement is a complete mechatronic assembly, confirm handling and packing requirements first.

Northern Calibration routes these enquiries to Precision Remaps UK for a job-specific answer. Owners and garages in Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Carlisle and Scotland can use the postal route once the exact units and scope are accepted.
